This is a picture of an Emerald Toucanet feeding from a tomato tree. The picture was taken from the balcony of our hotel. Toucanets (aulacorhynchus prasinus) are known in Spanish as (Curré) because of its call “curré, curré, curré” and they belong to the family of Toucans (Ramphastidae).
Toucanet is one of the most important predators for the famous Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno), he eats eggs from the Quetzals and other birds therefore it has a bad reputation in the forest.
They are monogamies species which means they mate for life. They have from tree to five chicks and both parents share from making the hole in the three to feeding the babies.
Toucanets are founded in mid elevations from 800m in the Caribbean side and 1000m in the pacific side until 2500m. They do up and down migration known as (altitudinal migration) looking for food which is mostly fruits from a big variety.
